Our approach:

Our objective is for all individuals is to have the same opportunities as others and to participate and belong genuinely to their communities, where they can engage in active valued roles and increase the depth of their relationships with family and community.

We understand that conventional approaches to change behaviour are ineffective as they pay little attention to the real problem/difficulty that an individual is experiencing. Traditional methods do not consider the lagging skills a person has to navigate expectations and social or environmental contexts. We delve deeper to identify and understand the underlying causes that are influencing the challenging behaviours.

Our Behaviour Support plans assess as many elements of a person’s life as possible, such as identifying their lagging skills and unsolved problems, their environments, and the social context. The plans do not aim to “fix” a person but rather offer them, and others, effective strategies to develop skills and collaboratively create mutually beneficial solutions. The goal for using this plan is to ensure others can understand who the person is and adequately support them to achieve a strong quality of life, which is scaffolded off their current strengths, interests, and expectations for their future.

Regulated Restrictive Practices

A restrictive practice means any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) Rules 2018 certain restrictive practices are subject to regulation. A restrictive practice is a regulated restrictive practice if it is or involves seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint, and environmental restraint.

If Behaviour Practitioners assess a situation where a Restrictive Practice is in place or is required, we will work in collaboration with the person, their family or others to provide a co-ordinated approach to strategy management to minimise risks to the person and others, using the least restrictive alternatives.

We will ensure our Behaviour Support Plans will contain a graduated process to reduce and eliminate Regulated Restrictive Practice that can be implemented, monitored and evaluated, whilst upholding the dignity and rights of the person.
